The Pursuit of Happiness
The declaration of the United States of America states that all men are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Men have pursued happiness since the beginning of time in a variety of ways. Psychologists and others who study human nature brew up theories trying to discover how to live a happy life. Should there not be an answer that applies to all? If there is a universal answer to this question, would it not be the most important information we could possibly share with others?
The pursuit of happiness ends when one discovers, and patterns their life after the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The gospel of Jesus Christ has been around since the beginning of time. The first two humans to walk the earth were taught the Gospel by heavenly hosts. Adam and Eve lived the gospel and were blessed. Since Adam and Eve, God has called prophets to preach and remind each of us where peace and happiness can be found.
Christ came to the earth and not only preached his gospel, but was a walking example of it each and every day of his life. He showed us what it meant to love, to obey, and to serve. When we follow His example, we are blessed with joy that isn't fleeting. We feel a purpose in our lives and desire to become something more than we were before. The gospel of Christ is the good news that families can live together forever, we can be cleansed from our sins, and we can live in peace with a loving God for the eternities.
I testify that Christ lives. I do know that he lived a perfect life and that in His last hours he completed the greatest act of love that has ever transpired. He allowed himself to be sacrificed for you and me. He paid the price of sin. The more that we learn of Him and His teachings, the more that we will feel his love in our lives. We will begin to feel a mighty change take place within our hearts as we become more like Him.
I will close this post with a suggestion. There may be times that you feel like you are doing the right things, but are struggling to feel happy. In my experience, my own unhappiness is often caused by my selfishness. When I am focused on pleasing myself and finding happiness, it seems to be very difficult to find. However, when we put Christ and our peers first, happiness seems to flow into our lives. Forget yourself. Seek to serve and bless the lives of others. You will feel the difference. When I think that the Savior never put his needs or wants ahead of the needs of others, it becomes very clear how I should live my life.
