The Beginning

Hello Friends, my name is Travis Lish.  I am from the beautiful town of Eagle, Idaho and I am starting this blog at the ripe young age of 22.  I have been very fortunate in my life to have been born into an amazing family and to have grown up with amazing friends.  I graduated high school in 2009, lived in Mexico for two years serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints and am currently attending BYU-Idaho in Rexburg.  As I have gone from chapter to chapter in my life, I have seen that it is the small and simple things that make a difference. This blog will be a record of the small and simple things that guide my life and the small but subtle blessings that come as a result.

The Main Character in Your Life Story

I will be personal with you for a moment. I find it very tempting to give heavy attention to my own sorrows and struggles before I even start to think of what others are going through. When I am having a hard time, I want others to be worried about me. When I am having a great day with amazing experiences, I expect others to rejoice with me. It is far easier for me to turn inward than to look outward. I suspect that I am not alone in this, but for now, I will speak for myself. If I am the main character in my story, this attitude is fitting as the story should focus on and revolve around the problems, needs, thoughts, and actions of the protagonist. Is this wrong? Shouldn't I be the main character of our own life? This view of the world is portrayed through pinterest, instagram, and other social media outlets It is all about me, my story, my selfies, and my posts. Is That What The Commandments Really Are?

Earlier this month, I was reading through the scriptures when I came across a verse that we all know. "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." (Matt 5:38) The Lord, in this verse, is inviting us to covenant with Him, to be made whole through Him, and to be like Him. It is a beautiful invitation given to us in the form of a commandment. I was thinking about the beauty of that invitation when it hit me.  Are all commandments invitations to be like God?  In other words, is God simply telling us who He is and inviting us to adopt the applications that will help us become like Him? It hit my heart as my perspective on commandments shifted.  If commandments are God's way of describing Himself to us, they are less about a mean God telling us what to do and more about a loving God inviting us to walk in His footsteps to become like Him.
